Do you self-censor on the page or perhaps before you write on the page? Do you reveal or say or tell too much? Do you vacillate between gradations of these contrasting positions in the same poem? Using a relaxed definition of the implicit (suggested, indirect) and explicit (clear, direct) speaker and voice, this workshop will explore what this can mean to the audience and ultimately one’s own voice and one’s own writing. Through handouts, Q&A and a writing prompt, we will discuss and address how poets can better help themselves understand the voice (or voices) that they can become. In essence, we will be asking the audience and discussing the question “who do you want to write like?” And ultimately the answer is: yourself (or yourselves).
