The journey to a chapbook or full collection starts with identifying themes, obsessions, habits, and fascinations. At times, one single poem does not capture the full complexity or impact of its spark. This workshop will examine key strategies to maximize connection and continuity among a group of poems, leading towards the goal of publication. Reviewing a body of one’s work is to consider what Miriam Sagan suggests as obsessive themes each poet possesses, or recurring inspirations and considerations, the frequent image that returns and returns. In group discussion, participants will develop methods for grouping poems, building cycles that are linked in some manner, and fully supporting the work to meet its own potential, creating a foundation for examining their work as not just a bunch of poems but an inter-related “community” of language and form to deliver to the reader.
